"I'd suggest passing on this one. These freshwater pearls (while lovely in color) were terribly pitted. There were dent marks and "scabs" in the majority of pearls, and unless your friends are blind, don't buy these. The quality in the hook of the necklace was really shotty looking; sewn too tightly. I also didn't like the fact that the necklace was too big for the box, plus the pearl earrings were loose and didn't even have their earring backs attached. Sloppy packaging and a very poor product this time. I'm sending them back in a jiff."

"This is the first product I have ever received from JTV that was horrible. I have bought hundreads of items over the years but these are horrible pearls. Several had pits so deep they looked more like a worm was eating them. STAY AWAY from this strand. I bought these as a gift and would not give these to my worst enemy. Sorry, but they are truly worthy of the garbage."

"So sorry to hear that Breq's strand was a disappointment. This strand that I had bought way back on August 15th after Sharon showed it, is one of the most beautiful strand that I have bought for my Mom's Christmas present. These are the largest of all the pearls to date that I have for her. There are NO blemishes, NO pits, and the nacre is thick and the luster is divine. Whites, pinks and a touch of light gold in them. These will pass for the South Sea Pearls ... okay, so they don't have the expensive closure, but the sterling silver ... unless it's filled with diamonds or such, no one is going to see it! I know she will filp for these. Yes, a bit pricy, but, in my humble opinion, well worth it. These are HUGE!!!! Personally, I can't wait so I can wear them too :) I will add though, you most likely will have to use one of those backings with the plastic disk for the earrings so they won't fall."

Fast Facts
| Once the price of pearls was so extravagant they caused wars and even funded a war, but today cultured pearls have made this “queen of gems” available to everyone. |
| Once, all pearls were only natural, most recovered from the Persian Gulf, occurring once in every 15,000 oysters. |
| Pearls form in the mollusk in a variety of shapes, including: round (spherical), off-round, semi-baroque, baroque, rice shaped, button or disk, and many fancy shapes created by the insertion of specially shaped nucleus beads. |
| Many royal families had an obsession with pearls. Some ancient Romans covered whole pieces of furniture in pearl, and in some monarchies only members of the royal were legally allowed to wear pearls. |
When light touches the pearl, it travels through all the layers of nacre, and each tiny crystal reflects the light like miniature prisms. The end result? A lustrous, breathtaking pearl.
|
|
A pearl is a lustrous, organic gem produced by saltwater oysters, freshwater mussels and occasionally by some shellfish. It exhibits a range of colors from white to pink, silver, cream, peach, gold, green, blue and black. Oh Mohs’ scale of hardness, pearl is 2.5 4.5. Primary sources of Sea Pearls include Persian Gulf; Gulf of Manaar; along the coasts of Madagascar, Burma (Myanmar), and the Philippines; many islands in the South Pacific, northern Australia; and the coastal lines of Central and northern South America; and some small beds in Japan. Primary sources of freshwater Pearls include United States, some in Europe (restricted in Central Europe).
