It has an extremely high refractive index and an optical dispersion that is greater than that of a diamond. It is not, however, as hard as a diamond; it only ranks 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs' hardness scale, making it relatively easy to damage. Care needs to be taken when working with these stones or wearing them in everyday "at risk" jewelry like rings and bracelets.

      "Ordered two of these stones for earrings. They are on the soft side of the Moh's scale...and felt earrings would be the right setting for them.

      One of the two stones was chipped on the corner. Had to send it back. Ordered a replacement...and it too was cracked on the edge. So these will just be going in a gem jar to be studied."
