    Spinel ranks 8 on the Mohs' scale and occurs naturally in every color, making it one of a handful of naturally beautiful gemstones that are not treated or color enhanced. Spinel has been called an "imposter" gem for some time, because its strong resemblance to corundum often has it mislabeled ruby or sapphire, including the 170-carat Black Prince Ruby and 352-carat Timor Ruby, which are both set in the British Crown Jewels but are both actually bright red spinels, not rubies.

    "Bought this one instead of going on auction because of the sale price.
    This stone matches a lighter violet spinel of the same size and I wanted to put the two together to compare shades. Spinel comes in so many variables. I just enjoy the color of this stone."

    "I was excited when I saw this item on the web. I really like pear shape gems. I was very disapointed when I recieved the item. It has a big black mark and chip along the girdle of the stone. This one is going back. Very nice color though."
