Ranking 8.5 on Mohs' scale, it's ideal for daily wear. Discovered in 1830 in emerald mines of Russia's Ural Mountains, it was named for Czar Alexander II. Found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania, alexandrite only forms when aluminum/beryllium and chrome (which rarely occurs in nature) come together, accounting for its rarity.
