This type of quartz has mistakenly been called "smoky topaz" in the past. It may be found with rutile needle inclusions and ranks 7 on the Mohs' hardness scale. Smoky quartz can be found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Smoky quartz is used as rock crystal as well as faceted into unusual cuts.
