    The name "emerald" comes from the Greek "smaragdos" meaning "green stone." Except the rare few, emeralds have inclusions that are generally accepted as well as treatments, which are normally stated and should not be a deterrent to purchasing. Even though they have a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on Mohs' scale, emeralds are sometimes brittle. Emeralds should only be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush.     "I've not had good luck with my emerald purchases and have returned two out of three. This one will be going back. I realize that most emeralds are opaque but I want at least some sparkle. I've decided to take a different approace and have purchased a loose Colombian gemstone and will have it set providing it meets my expectations. The one ring I did keep is TBM023. Even though the emerald is opaque, I really like the basic simple style and the price was right!"
