    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

The color is spectacular, dark purple with blue flashes and Cheryl is so right about the apparent change to "blueberry blue with purple flashes"The colors are very similar to the Zandrite I bought from you recently only deeper, darker and more "Royal" than the Zandrite. The cushion cut is perfect and the stone is absolutely clear. Absolutely a phenomenal value for the money!"
