    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    "I ordered this gemstone, after seeing it air on tv. The gemstone on tv was beautiful, the one I got was just so, so. The main reason I ordered it was to have an African Amethyst with blue flashes, mine did not have any. This was a very disappointing purchase, to me, as I could have gotten this same type of Amethyst anywhere. I gave it 3 stars, because it was a nice color, but again I was looking for blue flashes. I guess I'll just have to keep trying."
