Product Description for Min 2.00ct 10x8mm Oval African Amethyst-A4V248

The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

"I ordered two of these. The two I received are a beautiful royal purple and are almost perfectly matched. They are also both clean with my 10x loupe. A good buy."

"Many people don't care for a checkerboard top, but on such a dark stone it is PHENOMENAL! It brings a fire to the stone that is unmatched. No other Amethyst has the bold, bright color of the African. Here is a bit of Amethyst lore....

Amethyst has been popular as a gem since Pre-Roman times. The wine-loving Greeks even believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle."
