    Tanzanite was discovered in 1967. It has a unique violet-blue to blue color that only Ceylon sapphire and iolite come close to matching, with red-violet flashes. Tanzanite ranks a respectable 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs' scale, but loose stones and jewelry like rings and bracelets need to be treated with care to prevent damage. Tanzanite is only found in one place in the world, Tanzania, and the continued availability of tanzanite is uncertain, which increases its rarity and its price.

    "The picture I am looking at online is very blue. The stone I received was not, it was very violet...although the cut was beautiful and the stone was clear, it was not what I was looking for in a tanzanite. As we all know by now with colored gemstones, it's color, color, color. It's time for JTV to start offering color/cut/clarity grades, both with colored gemstones and diamonds, so that we know what we're paying for, and make informed decisions. This stone was described by the host as "AAA gem quality," but the color of the stone I received was not. I sent this back, the second tanzanite I've returned. I'm now reluctant to purchase another single, expensive stone from JTV, since the shipping charges (plus insurance) are adding up. This is not exactly risk-free..."
