    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    "You just don't know what the big deal about African amethyst is until you actually get one home and look at it in person. Cheryl's trick with the fluorescent light is fun, but this is just simply a beautiful stone. I've never seen such a rich, deep amethyst, and the color is fully saturated and alive. Simply gorgeous."
