    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    "My youngest son wanted an amethyst for his collection. We got on the internet & he picked this stone out. The stone we received has a deep royal purple color saturation. It's darker than the picture. It turned out to weigh about 1.75 carats & is a very clean, well cut stone. He is quite pleased to add this to his gemstone & fossil collection. This turned out to be better than expected."
