      Zandrite is a type of synthetic glass that was created by a major glass manufacturer. A developing scientist realized that the new creation had gemstone marketing possibilities and started a movement that began a new gemstone trend. It has 100% color change abilities, which is why it was given the name "zandrite"--a play off of the very expensive natural gem alexandrite. Zandrite ranks a slightly fragile 5 on Mohs', the same as glass.

      "I was very excited to try Zandrite after reading some of the reviews and seeing it on air, but I am just disappointed. The stone is lovely and the cut is gorgeous, but the color is flat and does not change at all. I expected SOME color change, but nothing. I got the stone on sale so it's difficult to argue the price for a pretty stone. However, I did not order the stone purely because it is pretty, I wanted to try Zandrite to see the color change. Tried putting this stone in various forms of light, but nothing. My color change sapphires were changing colors like crazy, but the Zandrite just stayed lavender. Looks like washed out amethyst. Might send it back."
