    Light to dark blue kyanite is unique because it often forms its color in the center of the stone and tends to be colorless at the edges. It ranks a 7 on Mohs' hardness scale. Kyanite exhibits pleochroism, meaning it appears to be different colors when viewed in different directions: violet-blue, colorless and cobalt blue. The main sources for gem-quality kyanite include Myanmar (Burma), Brazil, Kenya, Austria, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, and the U.S.

    "I was so looking forward to receiving this obscure gemstone. I was wondering would it be possible to have it set? ( The info on the web states you shouldn't use metal tweezers). Imagine my disappointment when I opened the gembox and it just looked black! Back it goes."

    Kyanite has a similar chemical composition to andalusite and fibrolite but it has a different crystal structure. It exhibits a range of colors including blue to colorless, blue-green and brown. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, kyanite ranks about 4.5 along its axes but a tougher 7 in general. It has a vitreous luster, and primary sources includes Burma (Myanmar), Brazil, Kenya, Austria, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, and the United States.
