    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    "This stone was a great price, and the color is amazing. However, there are cloudy streaks that I could see without magnification. It was a great size- 3.21 carats! I may keep it just because of the weight and color, and even though it isn't clean, it would be a nice collectable. Also, the cushion cut top sparkles so beautifully that I may have to buy other gems like this."
