Bixbite's cousins in the beryl family include a range of colorful stones like aquamarine, emerald, heliodor, morganite, and goshenite. It ranks 7.5 to 8 on Mohs' hardness scale, making it a durable stone. Named for mineral collector Maynard Bixby, bixbite is found only in a few locations in the western U.S. and possibly in Mexico.
