    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    love the size and cut of this amethyst, and the flashes of color you see
    with movement of the stone are gorgeous. But I do have a problem with
    the darkness of the stone, overall. In some light it's hard to see the
    purple body color at all. The stone looks nearly black. If you like
    dark African amethyst, this is a great purchase. I'd rather sacrifice
    the flashes of red and blue in favor of seeing purple all the time, so
    I probably wouldn't buy another African amethyst."
