    The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunken." Greeks believed adding ground-up amethysts to their wine would prevent intoxication. Amethysts range from pale lilac (sometimes called Rose de France) to deep purple, which are the most valuable. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs' scale, making it a durable stone for jewelry, and is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Madgascar, Mexico, Zambia, Namibia and the U.S.

    "I read the reviews before I purchased this stone and decided to get it anyway - JTV has a great return policy that I've not had to use yet. The stone is beautiful. Eye clean, 10x loupe clean but as with any stone there are little tiny nicks when examined thru a 20x lighted loupe. I should have gone for a heavier CTW cause the stone is thin but still an added beauty to my collection."
