      As a hard 9 on Mohs' scale, sapphire is ideal for all types of jewelry. They are found in every color, and all colors other than blue are considered fancy.

      The most desired and expensive of fancy sapphires is the Padparadscha sapphire. The term "Padparadscha" comes from the Sanskrit/Singhalese words "padma" meaning "lotus" and "raga" meaning "color," because its pinkish-orange color is similar to that of the lotus flower. The name sapphire may derive from the Greek Sanskrit sanipriya, meaning ???dear to the planet Saturn.???

      Some are found in Africa, but true Padparadscha sapphires are from Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
