The name "andalusite" comes from Andalusia, a province in Spain where it was discovered. Andalusite is pleochroic, meaning it appears to be different colors when viewed from different directions, and is generally cut to enhance this feature. In fact, andalusite has such pronounced pleochroism that the colors can be seen simultaneously. Andalusite ranks a 7 to 7.5 on Mohs' scale and is found in lovely earth-tone colors like reds, greens, and oranges. It is mined in Brazil and Sri Lanka.

"I was disappointed that mine did not have a prominate cross as the one in the picture does. Still not sure if I'm keeping it, as I bought it for my son for his birthday. I went ahead and got him something else. What does that say?"

"I first saw this when I was scrolling through one of the shows catalog of items. I did not purchase it at first, but then saw it a few more times and became interested in it so I purchased one. I found that it had a nice smooth texture to it and it was interesting to see the cross in the stone.It has different shades of brown and sections where it has an irridescence to it. If you enjoy the unusual then this stone might be for you."

Unlike alexandrite, andalusite color changes are pleochroic and based on viewing angle - not lighting.

Andalusites are often cut so that the table is green with red or orange on the edges.

Named after the Spanish city Andalusia, andalusite was first discovered in Spain.

Andalusite is a naturally occurring pleochroic gemstone. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, andalusite is 7.5. It has a vitreous or matte luster, and primary sources include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Spain (Andalusia), Sri Lanka, and the United States.

Color

Andalusite is typically found in yellow-green, green, or brownish-red shades. As the andalusite stone is rotated, different colors and different intensities of colors can appear, including olive green, rich reddish brown, or grayish green.
