Product Description for Min .40ct Mm Varies Oval Alexandrite With Erv $3,200.00

Alexandrite is a phenomenal gem known as "emerald by day, ruby by night" because it changes color from green in fluorescent and daylight to red in incandescent light. Ranking 8.5 on Mohs' scale, it's ideal for daily wear. Discovered in 1830 in emerald mines of Russia's Ural Mountains, it was named for Czar Alexander II. Found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania, alexandrite only forms when aluminum/beryllium and chrome (which rarely occurs in nature) come together, accounting for its rarity.

"The is definatly NOt a vs or a vvs. It has a fracture that is visable to the naked eye. It extends abouyt 1/4 if the lenth but is to the side. It has a fantastic color change and I still might keep it."

"I purchased this real alexandrite because it is my birthstone, and I have always wanted a real alexandrite. I have purchased the Russian lab created from jtv and those stones were wonderful. These 2 stones that I purchased from Brazil don't even come close to the lab created ones. I saw these on tv and the color change was wonderful. However, the 2 stones I ordered have very poor color change and didn't even match each other. One is much better than the other, and the base color is more saturated. I wanted to make earrings from these. I am returning them, however, because they are unsuitable for this purpose and the variation between the 2 stones is such that I couldn't put them together in any jewelry."

"I was so looking forward to getting this stone but I was really disappointed. The quality of the stone was more of a SI than a VS. The stone was sent back and I'll just save a little more and get a VVS stone."

      Alexandrite

      Fast Facts

Alexandrite is a highly prized variety of chrysoberyl. Alexandrite only forms when aluminum/beryllium and chrome (which rarely occurs in nature) come together, accounting for its rarity. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, alexandrite is 8.5. It has a strong vitreous luster and primary sources include Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Brazil (Minas Gerais).

      Color

Alexandrite is typically found in blue, blue-green, and brownish-green shades. However, this phenomenal gem is known as "emerald by day, ruby by night" because of its ability to change color, depending on the type of light in which it's viewed. In the daylight and fluorescent light, alexandrite appears in shades of blue and green, but in tungsten (incandescent) light, it appears in shades of red. Other alexandrite color changes are possible (from blue to purple, from greenish blue to reddish blue, from brownish-green to brownish-red, etc.) and also highly prized.
