A developing scientist realized that the new creation had gemstone marketing possibilities and started a movement that began a new gemstone trend. It has 100% color change abilities, which is why it was given the name "zandrite"--a play off of the very expensive natural gem alexandrite. Zandrite ranks a slightly fragile 5 on Mohs', the same as glass.

      "This is a fun stone.The color change is immediate when stepping into a different light source. It changes from purple to blue, both good looking and will still match whatever you are wearing. I generally want natural gemstones, but this is a good case for a simulant."
