      Citrine gets its color from traces of iron and its name from its citrus color, though it is also found in medium yellow and golden to reddish brown. Most citrine is heat treated to enhance the color, and as quartz, it ranks a 7 on the Mohs' hardness scale, making it a great choice for durable jewelry. Citrine is found mostly in Brazil, but it is also mined in Madagascar, Uruguay, Bolivia, Mexico, and Spain. Citrine sometimes serves as an alternative to topaz for the November birthstone.
