"Usually the specimens you receive are quite small--less than a nickel or quarter, but these are truly "display" quality gem specimens (2-3 inches in diameter each). The books are "so-so" lots of duplicate information in the beginning and end of each book, but they do give you a good idea of where to go to "treasure hunt" on your own for gems in each region of the US; and what to expect and how to plan.
My only concern is that I don't think that all of the "samples" are properly identified (after all they were probably done by someone with minimum education in gem information and probably just a general "cheat sheet" to use, but identifying the specimens on your own can be fun in itself!
I would recommend on the basis of the gem samples alone!"

"I FOUND THE KIT TO BE UNSATISFACTORY, I'VE BOUGHT MANY, MANY, PRODUCTS FROM JEWLERY TV, AND I HAVE FOUND THEM TO BE WONDERFUL, BUT THIS BOX OF STONES WERE ALL THE SAME STONES AND I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PURSHASE, I WILL NOT RETURN THEM DUE TO THE FACT THAT I GAVE THEM TO MY 14 YR OLD SON AS A GIFT."

"I purchased this item mainly for the books. I thought it would give location information for each state where certain rocks/gems could be found and dug on one's own, such as road cuts, quarries, rivers for panning, etc.
From what I did see (I paged through the books), the books only give locations of mines that allow public in for a fee. The majority of the information is locations of museums. I live in Wisconsin and was hoping to get information on where I could go in the state to collect rocks. I was extremely disappointed. The only thing listed for Wisconsin was about five different rock/mineral museums. Nothing for locations on collecting. This could easily be the case for other states. I know I saw one east coast state with no information at all. If you are interested in rock collecting in Wisconsin and want to know where to go in the state for rock hounding, don't bother to buy the northeast book.
The mineral specimens were of fair quality. Don't expect to get 24 different mineral specimens. My specimens consisted of 24 specimens of only 3 different types. And they are the common minerals as well, apophyllite, stilbite and a couple prehnite. The prehnite was far from gem quality. None of the specimens had any spectacular color. All but 2 were white/clear. The two that had color were a very pale blue.
I bought this item to give to my husband as a gift. Now I'm not so sure I want to because after looking it over, it seems like a pretty lame gift for him.
I suggest you buy this package if you want to give away the mineral specimens as a gift to many different people. Maybe keep a couple for your collection.
The box the minerals came in was smashed up on the end and was not taped shut, but it didn't appear there was damage to any of the specimens. Each specimen was identified by a piece of paper underneath the specimen. The books are fine for people who are willing to pay to find their rocks, minerals and gems and for those who like to go to museums to look at rocks."

"These were purchased for my son (7) who absolutely loves gems, rocks, and stones. The amount of imformation is terrific. He said it was his best Christmas gift Santa could have brought (next to the WII of coarse). They have a home on his dresser on display for everyone to see."
