    Most varieties of quartz are prized for having few or no inclusions, which increases their value; rutilated quartz is more valuable and sought after because of its inclusions. These "inclusions" are golden needles of rutile that form different patterns inside the stone, sometimes referred to as "Venus hair." Each pattern is as different as two snowflakes are from each other, and some of them are remarkably beautiful. It is a great collector's stone and ranks 7 on Mohs' hardness scale.

    "I love rutilated quartz, but this particular stone was not attractive. Most of rutiles were fine horizontal angel hair, but what ruined the stone were the big vertical ones that were brown on the ends (looked like a burned piece of straw)...they made the stone look dirty. I know each stone is different, so I'll try for a cleaner one."

Quartz comprises several different groups of gems from crystalline quartz (crystals viewable by the naked eye) and crypto-crystalline (microscopic crystals). Crystalline quartz includes amethyst, aventurine, rock crystal, blue quartz, citrine, hawk’s eye, prasiolite, quartz cat’s eye, smoky quartz, rose quartz, and tiger’s eye. Crypto-crystalline quartz is also known as chalcedony and includes agate, bloodstone, carnelian, chyrsoprase, jasper, moss agate, onyx and sard.
